The school, the city > Lacaton&Vassal building

Following a decision in 1996 to create a new building, an invitation to tender was published and the winning designs were selected in 2003. The worksite started at the end of 2006 and was completed two years later. Students moved in in February 2009.

For this achievement Anne Lacaton and Jean-Philippe Vassal won the prestigious "Grand Prix National de l'Architecture" in 2009 (read the "Cité de l'Architecture et du Patrimoine" press file). In an article in "Architecture d'Aujourd'hui" (issue 374) the architects declared on the occasion of the school's opening: "The Nantes School of Architecture is a manifest" (see the project and its press review on their website)

A book by Caroline Paul and André Sauvage, published by Archibooks, recounts this adventure under the title "Les Coulisses d'une Architecture" (behind the scenes of a building). We thank the publisher for allowing its downloading (here for cover, here for the body text) and digital consultation.

"Nantes School of Architecture, University Building in France", a book in English by Ilka and Andreas Ruby, published by the Holcim Foundation, is also available in flip-book format on
